Fools or No Fools, This Is, Quite Frankly, Blasphemous!
I don't normally dive into current events, but this seemed as good a time as any . . .
April Fools’ Day was this Tuesday, so many rumors were circulating on the Internet about popular brands and such doing rather radical things. Rumors that were only in jest. However, there was one rumor that has not been confirmed as a prank yet (as far as I am aware) that is downright awful!
This rumor centers around Netflix’s upcoming Chronicles of Narnia movies, which may or may not be offering Meryl Streep the role of Aslan.
Now, besides the fact that I really don’t care for the gender-swapping of characters when adapting a book as a movie,1 casting a woman as Aslan is honestly blasphemous, whether or not it is an April Fool’s prank.
Why? Because Aslan is literally a representation of Christ in the story. And I don’t just mean the “Christ-figure” that can often be found in literature. C.S. Lewis had this to say about his notable character:
“[Aslan] is an invention giving an imaginary answer to the question, ‘What might Christ become like if there really were a world like Narnia and He chose to be incarnate and die and rise again in that world as He actually has done in ours?’”2

While it is annoying to see movies change certain aspects of classic stories to make them more “modern” (Snow White, anyone?), I feel like this is really a step too far.
Why?
C.S. Lewis wrote Narnia as a supposal, seeing what it would be like if Christ were to be in another world. In Narnia, Lewis’s “Christ” is Aslan. And might I remind you, Christ was not a female!
Now some very very left-leaning “Christians” today have tried to make Him one. There are some self-proclaimed Christians who think God is a girl. Some claim He is neither female nor male, but rather an androgynous being. There are “Christian” books and movies that portray Him as female or androgynous.
Look, I’m female.
I love being female.
But my God is NOT A FEMALE!!!!
The Bible is very clear on that!
Whenever God is spoken of in the Bible, He is described as a male.
When God came down to earth to dwell among us, He came as a Man: Jesus Christ.
God is not a woman, and it is blasphemous to call Him one.
And when someone makes a character who specifically represents Christ — that would be Aslan — female, that is also blasphemous.
Is this rumor all a joke?
I don’t know. I hope that Netflix doesn’t actually think this will fly. (It won’t — just saying. The backlash over the rumor is good evidence of that.)
But even if it is a joke, it is no laughing matter.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is to be held in the highest respect as He is the eternal Ruler of all. And making a mockery out of what is supposed to be a representation of Him is rude, inappropriate, and downright blasphemy.
I would truly love to hear your thoughts on this post. Please share them with me in the comments section below!

I have enjoyed a few rewritten stories that “gender-swapped” characters, but these stories were rewritten as different stories entirely. For instance, there was a pretty good book I read based on Cinderella where the MC was a boy, not a girl (Cinderellis and the Glass Hill by Gail Carson Levine). But, this story was not the same as the original story, being a completely different story in itself. Netflix’s movies are not rewrites but are supposedly based on the original stories.
Thanks for the encouragement, Abi! 😊
I must say it was kinda daunting to address, especially as I felt that some Christians might not feel quite feel the same way as I seeing as The Chronicles of Narnia are fiction. However, the world has become increasingly opposed to biblical truth, and this can be increasingly seen in what is being produced in Hollywood.
Whether or not the rumors are true, I hope the thoughts I've shared here will open others' eyes to just how blatant the world has become in their opposition to God.
Amen! In this day & age we're living in, many people, especially the media, wants to modernize everyone & everything! As Christians, we are to share the good news of Christ, not try to modernize His character to fit our culture!
