Time has gotten away from me this month, so instead of a normal, full-fledged review, I will be sharing a list of my top five favorite Christian fiction series and books! I can’t wait to get started, so let’s go!
1. The Elsie Dinsmore Series
Author: Martha Finley
Genre: Historical Fiction
Age Recommendation: 10+
This is definitely my favorite Christian series of all time! It follows Elsie’s life from the time she is a little girl. Her faith in God is amazing for a person of any age, but it is often tested by relatives who don’t share her principles.
When it was first published, it would not have been classified as historical fiction, but looking back now I classified it as such since it is set in the Civil War era.
There are two versions of this series that you can read (and I have read part of them both). You can read the original series, which consists of the 28 stories first penned by Martha Finley. You can also find the Elsie Dinsmore: Life Of Faith Series. This version contains important context at the beginning, but it only has 8 books, and it ends with the stories found in book 6 of the original series. It also changes a few names and side plots. Both are good, but I liked the original series better.
2. The Princess
Author: Lori Wick
Genre: Romance
Age Recommendation: 16+ (I would not recommend it for anyone younger.)
This is a really good book about a young woman named Shelby who agrees to an arranged marriage with the widower prince of the fictional country of Pendaran (which I probably spelled wrong). It explores the difficulties she faces as she becomes accustomed to living in the palace with a man who is still very much in love with his deceased wife. As she navigates these new circumstances, her faith in God and her family (both old and new) are her greatest support.
3. The Chronicles of Narnia
Author: C.S. Lewis
Genre: Classic Fantasy
Age Recommendation: 6+
What would a round-up of Christian fiction be without The Chronicles of Narnia? A beloved Christian series of 7 books, it follows the stories of different humans as they end up in the fantasy country of Narnia. Epic battles, daring escapes, and resurrection are just some of the events found in this amazing story! Whether or not it is an allegory (as many take it) or a supposal (which was what C.S. Lewis himself said it was), it is a story in which we Christians can recognize important principles and stories of our faith.
4. The Red Rock Mysteries
Authors: Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry
Genre: Mystery
Age Recommendation: 12+ (how well can you handle suspense?)
OOOOooooo! Mysteries! But these aren’t your typical who-dunnit mysteries! These books follow the Timberline twins as they solve mysteries, some of which include their own family. The twins often turn to God to help and protect them, as their search for the truth tends to lead them into danger.
These books, of which there are 15, have very short chapters, which are interesting because they switch back-and-forth from one twin’s point of view to the other’s. Also, they’re suspenseful, so they’ll keep you up at night.
5. The Cooper Kids Adventure Series
Author: Frank Peretti
Genre: Thriller
Age Recommendation: 12+
I was not prepared for these books when I read them, because I don’t typically read thrillers. Not to mention someone told me they were mystery books, which I guess they are in a way. But who in the world writes thrillers for kids?!
That aside, this series was wonderful, or at least what I read of it. There are 8 books, of which I have only read 4. They follow the Cooper kids as they help their father in his travels around the world. In the books I’ve read, the kids have to deal with some inward or outward spiritual difficulty, which is where the thriller aspect comes in. I mean, what do you do when you encounter a modern day Anakim? Oh wait, I don’t want to spoil anything . . .
I would definitely recommend these, unless you don’t like suspense or are easily frightened. Excellent series!
That’s It!
I hope you enjoyed this quick round-up of my top five Christian fiction series and books! If you have read any of these books, please share your opinion in the comments! I’d love to hear what you thought!
