Most of us tend to take each verse in Proverbs separately. And some of them should be. However, as I was reading my Bible for devotions this week, I noticed how these verses go together. The first verse is one I often hear quoted by itself, but it really should be looked at in conjunction with the following verse.
So today we will do just that.
The Name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Ah, the beauty of metaphors within poetry! Of course, the Name of the LORD is not actually a building, but through this imagery we are shown the safety found in the Name of the LORD. The person who places his full confidence and trust in God will find himself in a place of safety. When we call on the Name of the LORD, we can trust Him to keep us safe. The safety found in Him will last forever.
A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his imagination.
But then we have those people who trust in their wealth to sustain them. They think that with enough money, they can buy their way to safety. Unfortunately for them, this security is only within their imagination.
Just take a look at the economy. Inflation causes the worth of our money to plummet. Things that once could have been bought with one dollar now cost ten times as much. And once you spend your money, it’s gone. Our money does not last long on this earth.
Then, once you die, any money that you still have can do absolutely nothing for you! You can’t take it with you!
See, the security thought to be had in money isn’t really all it’s cracked up to be.
A Big Difference
So, we have two types of people here: those who trust in money and those who trust in the Name of the LORD. Let me tell you, looking at these verses, I would much rather trust in the LORD. The safety I find in Him is much more sure than the supposed safety found in money.
So, let’s place our full trust in the Name of the LORD! No matter how much the world may try to tell us that we can find safety in money, we know that it is fleeting.
Let’s Pray:
Lord,
We need money for a lot in this world, but help us not to place our faith in it. Help us to understand that the only lasting treasure and safety is found in You! And give me the courage to share this truth with others. I trust in You, Lord, to keep me safe.
In Jesus’ Name I pray,
Amen
