This verse should be both a comfort and a reproof to us.
First of all, it should comfort of us to know that it isn’t our fault if people turn away from the Gospel. Certainly we should share the Truth, but there will be people who, no matter how hard we try to get through to them, just won’t accept the Gospel. These people don’t want to admit that they have done things which are less than right, and so they hate the Light.
At the same time, we should acknowledge a bit of reproof in here. Even though we as Christians are called to walk in the light, there are times when we want to harbor some secret sin. At these times, we start to avoid our Bible, the church, and prayer, because we don’t want to admit that we have done wrong. We end up avoiding the Light!
When this happens, we need to admit that we’ve done wrong and return to Jesus. He is the true Light, and even though it may hurt to have Him show us where we’ve gone wrong, He will also take away the burden of our sins.
So, in response, let us first admit to Jesus when we’ve sinned and allow Him to forgive that sin! And second, let us continue to try to reach people with the Light of the Gospel and refuse to get discouraged by those who hate the Light!
Let’s Pray:
Dear Father,
I confess to You that sometimes I try to avoid You, just because I think whatever sin I’m holding onto is better. This is wrong, and I ask that you would forgive me for it. Remind me that no matter how sweet some sin may seem, You are infinitely better! Also, Father, give me the courage to share the Gospel with others! I realize that there will be those who will hate me for it, but I know that even one soul brought to You brings great rejoicing in Heaven!
Thank You, Father, for Your blessed Light!
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
