Scripture:
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever:
With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever:
But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.
— Psalm 136 KJV
You know, this Psalm is a pretty good place to come if you want some good reasons to thank the Lord. He is good! He is the God of gods! He is the Lord of lords! He has done great wonders! But there is one really big point the Psalmist makes. Yes, these things I’ve already listed are reasons to thank the Lord for who He is, but there is one thing that the Psalmist grabs onto and keeps repeating over and over:
Or, if you’re reading the ESV, “His steadfast love endures forever.”
See, Israel didn’t deserve any of these things that God did for them. As rebellious as they were, they certainly deserved destruction! But God loved them so much that He extended mercy and grace to them, working wonders in their lives!
We don’t deserve His steadfast love and mercy either, yet He still shows them to us! We, along with the Psalmist, should be eager to give thanks to the Lord! For He indeed is good, and His steadfast love and mercy are shown to us, even though we don’t deserve it!
This song isn’t based on the same passage, but the idea is the same: Thank the Lord, for He is good and His steadfast love/mercy endures forever!
Today, I am thankful for the Lord’s steadfast love and mercy! He indeed is good! What are you thankful for today? Why not share what you are thankful for and why by joining the Thankfulness Challenge on the subscriber chat?
Let’s Pray!
Oh Lord, You are indeed good! I give thanks to You, for You have done many wonders! I thank You that You have seen fit to extend Your love and mercy to sinners! I give praise to You, for You are the King of kings, Lord of lords, and God of gods! Where would I be without You, Lord! All that I have and all that I am, I owe it all to You! Thank You for the ways in which You work in my life!
In Jesus’ precious Name I pray,
Amen
How powerful to remember that God's ways are higher than our ways and that He can only do good!
I thank the Lord for His sovereign control over our lives and circumstances. Many times without God's loving sovereignty we would make wrong decisions. Thank God that He cares about us enough to lovingly control our lives!
